Located Kamakura, Kanagawa, this two-story private house design by Tokyo-based practice Kochi Architect’s studio, provides a series of generously-sized outdoor programs, which the interior floor field equals 47% of the total building footprint to outcome in a holistic set up that comprises exterior spaces into its design.

The private house project is started from a simple box form. The necessary programs were configured and then created out to
integrate a mini garden, outdoor patio, and a lifted entrance hall that opens up to the outdoors. An outdoor stairway allows access to the house, which reconciles its communal space of living, dining, kitchen area on the second level. The roof was extracted up to an asymmetrically-pitched form.

Viewed from the outside, the 47% house comprises of a dark shell that partially encloses around a white volume. The structure extends out to provide shade to the entrance hall and generous outdoor terrace. As a consequence, the line among the interior and exterior is obscured. Floor-to-ceiling glazing which lines both sides of the second storey adds to this effect, occupying the living space in direct dialogue with the site.
