Australian based design practice Hecker Phelan & Guthrie in association with Buro Architects and Nonda Katsalidis have completed the interior designing project of a residence in Alma Road, Melbourne, Australia. Victorian Mansions of the 1800’s are soft points amongst designers and architects thus making this interior decorating project become a special case as the designers should retain its originality and historical identity.
The architect applied three different finish elements to the main interior, to create different tones but still in one theme. Dark wooden floors creating modernity, marble expressing nostalgia/formality and finally a lighter reddish wood of what seems like iroko that brings out warmth and control. These interior design finishes are grouped together throughout the residence and each one stands out for what it expresses.
Each interior spaces have different functions. The rooms with brighter atmosphere are those whch host the family life and daily activity, while the darker ones are intended for for lounging and relaxing. Meanwhile, the master bedroom is left bare with a white color interior painting ideas throughout expressing brightness and comfort. All of the decorated elements throughout are balanced with order and control. There are furniture pieces which are traditional but controlled through the fabric or their positioning. This all intended to preserve the historical entities of the mansion while provide a modern home interior living for its residences.

This mansion was wonderfully designed. It is the perfect balance of classic elements and modern functionality. Sometimes when decorators are trying to create a classical feel in a room they add to many elements, making the room appear cluttered and chaotic. However, these rooms have the right balance. There are enough decorative pieces to make the home seem warm, inviting, and regal without going overboard.
