The three storeys Soundhouse was initiated by a group of people from University of Sheffield who has a big passion for music. Rubber is the main material to cover up most of its exterior. By the help of Careyjones Architects and Jefferson Sheared Architects, the unique building (which is the first in the United Kingdom for using mass quantity of rubber) is built.
The main purpose of the rubber cover was to create a soundproof exterior. The black building has become a landmark on the university campus, turning heads both for the design and the creative environment. Consider it the 21st century flagship for “music boxes”.
