Mercabarna-Flor Architectural Project by Willy Müller Architects

Willy Müller Architects (WMA) has completed a modern architectural project in Mercabarna, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Barcelona. It’s an innovative market building for flower, plant, and accesory wholesalers. The long-term objective of the project is to become one of the principal markets in Catalonia and the rest of Spain, as well as a reference for facilities on European level.

Besides performing the main objective as a principal market, the building also serves as an iconic value which differ from the other buildings in town. The most recognized part of the building is the skin which is designed to express several characteristics of identity related to the activities of this sector.

To be parallel to the concept, the big zinc roof that covers the whole market is designed with parallel linear geometries with different tones in a nonsymmetrical way, imitating the aerial view of the cultivated flower fields, marked by a big frame with a multitude of colors that descends and rises to organize entrances along the building, a distinct movement and graphic image that is in line with this Flower Market.

There is a contrary between the facade and the interior, which simultaneously created a perfect contrast in between. While the roof is the big integrating element, the interior three conceptually different markets are located each of them with its own specific characteristics and logistic and technical conditions, according to the product on sale.

The building is divided into several sections which serves several needs. The Cut Flower Market section is equipped with modern industrial cooling systems, where temperatures can be maintaned between 2°C and 15°C. This to support the products which has a fast turn over with a selling time of only three days.

On the other section, the area is designed with a radiant industrial floor with passive cooling systems that introduce humidity, which guarantee that the temperatures will never be below 15°C, or above 26°C. This would support products with more selling time for abput 15 days. This means that besides being a vending zone, this sector is also a storage zone or greenhouse during this period of time.
