A Texas firm Lake Flato Architects has completed a modern California retreat house design. Their client was Jason and Sarah Yee who are employees of an investment firm in Denver. The house was Mr. Yee’s dream since 12 years before, until they both decided to buy 20 acres of area in Carmel nearby Santa Lucia Preserve, and called the firm to help them make the plan into reality.

Rather than a conventional two-story home, the firm sketched a compound of connected structures — the kitchen, living room and bedrooms, each with its own distinct character — spread across a rounded knoll. The house was conceived as a mini-village that appeared to have grown incrementally, the way farmers add barns and outbuildings over time.

On the sheltered side, sliding doors open rooms to a swimming pool and lawn, a civilized patch set off from the wilds with an arcing stone wall. Family and friends tend to gather in an open-air room covered by a trellis that will eventually support a living ceiling of vines.

Lake Flato architects did their job well, turning 5,000 square feet area (with four bedrooms) into a perfect retreat which doesn’t look like a big house at all. Although, there are a lot of little places to escape and a lot of private perspectives on the land.
