Forest is always the best place to retreat after a long time of daily routine and activity. Architect Turnbull Griffin Haesloop designed a magnificent modern house in Sebastopol California, for two graphic designers.
The house bridges between two stands of redwood trees, with the northern window wall facing out to the expansive view. Decks located at either end of the house open onto paths that lead to the pool on one side and the studio/garage on the other. The southern elevation screens the interior from the driveway and road above, but allows southern light in through the clerestory windows.
As the residents enter the house, a dormer rises up over the dining area to frame the view. The main house is modest in size, only 1,700 square feet, but feels spacious due to an open floor plan. The clients’ wonderful art objects are housed in the long southern wall bookcase. The exterior is clad in cedar siding with a metal roof and the interior features a Douglas fir ceiling and decking, sheetrock walls and Ipe flooring. Via. Wow, I am impressed by this plan. My husband and I built a small ranch home in SD of 1,098 square feet on a hill looking west over acres of green pasture, a creek, and cropland. We built small, knowing we’d build on later. I’ve been searching for plans that inspire me and capture our view of the sunsets and approaching storms. I get bored with regular home plans, so this was a breath of fresh air even though it is surprisingly simple. Although we’d want a walk-out basement under it, I love this design.
Thanks
