Croatian 3LHD architects has completed House K, home for a family in Zagreb, Croatia. The house is situated on a large residential plot on a moderate eastern-facing slope at the edge of a forest near the base of Sljeme hill. Located on Štirovnicka street, Grad/mjesto, Zagreb, Država, Croatia, beautiful forest view were gained by placing the object next to the street in the north-western corner of the plot.

Inspired by the the shape of a snail’s shell, the house was designed by involving a spiral twisting around its own axis. All functional elements of the house follow each other and are built around a central atrium. The atrium was made in order to compensate for a lack of sunlight in the living-room area and enabled two-way lighting of certain rooms.

The entrance was placed at the edge of the southern facade where the spiral movement around the atrium and through the half-levels begins. The spiral ends in a big living room that opens towards the outdoor terrace and the forest.

Untreated teak boards are used massively to all facades and terraces, and continues in the interior in response to the spiral progression, as well as to achieve an intimate and comfortable atmosphere. Black appears as an additional color accent on the walls, offering a means of directing one’s gaze and movement.
